'Monster of a human being': Solskjaer delighted with star's progress at United

McSauce. McCaptain. McGoal. McManoftheMatch. Yesterday was a big day for Manchester United star Scott McTominay.

Made skipper for the first time by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes were rested, at least until the 45th minute, McTominay repaid the faith put in him with a standout performance that earned him BT Sport’s Man of the Match award.

And after the game, Solskjaer had nothing but praise for the 24-year-old.

‘Scott has had a very good season,’ he said on BBC’s Match of the Day.
‘He is being more and more dangerous, we know he can be a box-to-box midfielder.
‘He should have scored a few more on set-plays before now because he is a monster of a human being. I am very happy he got the goal.
And the boss also spoke on BT Sports after the match about his reasons for selecting him as captain.
‘I wanted to see how he took to that captain’s armband, and he did really well. He didn’t shrink.

‘He normally leads anyway, but then we just wanted to test him. We’ve always trusted our young men coming through and Scott’s one of them that we really believe has got the DNA of Man United in him, and he knows what it is to be a Man United player.

‘Should he be scoring more goals? We’ve said that to him so many times! He’s strong, he’s quick, he can leap, good timing, so he should get more goals.’

McTominay himself was less than impressed with his own performance.

‘I need to score more from set pieces, that’s one thing that I work on with the coaches, getting on the end of headers,’ he told MUTV.

‘I’m 6ft 3in, I should be scoring more.

‘I was a little bit loose at times today.’
