'It's a worry': Solskjaer admits his side has not solved defensive problem

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that his side has failed to solve the problem of dealing with set pieces.

The manager was asked at the pre-match press conference ahead of today’s FA Cup clash with Watford whether he was surprised that a back line comprising internationals such as Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw isn’t good enough to deal with ‘basic stuff’.

‘It’s something we’ve addressed that we need to do better at,’ Solskjaer responded.

‘When we don’t get the first contact, we’ve been punished quite severely and more often than anyone else.

‘We’re quite good at the first contact, defending the ball, but when we haven’t, we’ve conceded too many goals.

‘So I think we’re very high up there in the stats, when we don’t get the first contact we concede. So that’s a worry of course.

‘It’s a worry when you concede goals but we haven’t defended really well at times.

‘But against Man City, when you defend as well as you do in open play and you don’t concede too many chances then you’re disappointed, that in big games against good players and good teams, that in set plays we lose that bit of focus.

‘It’s a big part of football, so many goals are conceded in set plays and we do have a good record of winning the first ball but when we don’t it seems to go in every time.’

The Red Devils have conceded seven goals from set pieces so far this season.
