Manchester United have received a boost ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final clash as it has been revealed that six Manchester City players have tested positive for COVID-19 and must self-isolate.
Several reports have circulated suggesting that five City players had breached their Elite Sports bubble and spread COVID through the camp, which resulted in their midweek match with Everton being postponed. Kyle Walker and Gabriel Jesus were linked with the reports and Eric Garcia has since been reported to be the sixth player with a positive test.
According to Pep Guardiola, City have been told by the Premier League not to reveal the players involved but their teamsheet for today’s match against Chelsea had some notable absentees besides those three. If they are also self-isolating due to testing positive for the coronavirus after Christmas and New Years parties, they will almost certainly all be unavailable for Wednesday’s game.
The other players missing from today’s squad were Ederson, Nathan Aké and Ferran Torres.
Benjamin Mendy has also been in trouble for flouting isolation rules by attending a New Year’s Eve party, but he has tested negative and was in the City squad today.
Aymeric Laporte was also missing from the fixture, but this was due to a thigh injury that will also probably rule him out of the United game.
The absence of so many players for City will be a boost for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he seeks to reach his first final as manager of United. Last term, United were knocked out of both the FA Cup and Europa League at the semi-final stage.
United have also had some luck in being drawn at home for the semi-final, which for the first time will just take place over one leg.
Kick off will be at 7.45pm on Wednesday evening.
