Sources inside Old Trafford have been revealing what has really happened with regard to Paul Pogba following his agent’s announcement that he is finished at Manchester United and will not sign another contract with the club.
The situation of has come to a head again following Mino Raiola’s comments to Tuttosport on the day United were set to play their crucial Champions League Group H decider against RB Leipzig.
The Athletic says the nature and timing of the comments has left Pogba’s teammates feeling betrayed.
‘It dominates all the conversations … when they finish their meetings, “Is that right Paul?” That’s the atmosphere in the dressing room, for sure,’ insiders claim.
‘Some sources said team-mates felt disrespected at the timing,’ reporter Laurie Whitwell confirms.
‘Solskjaer was furious at Raiola and spoke to his player to express his displeasure, but the circumstances dictated a certain diplomacy too, with Pogba possibly required to perform a few hours later,’ Whitwell explains.
‘Suspicions are that Solskjaer would have preferred to avoid using Pogba at all against Leipzig as a signal of power — and it seems telling that Donny van de Beek was the first substitute.
‘It remains to be seen how much Pogba features from here but Solskjaer has long since advocated a sale and Woodward is understood to appreciate the need to resolve the matter.’
Indeed, Woodward came close to selling Pogba this summer. ‘Sources say a transfer away was organised late in this recent summer window before the buying club pulled out unexpectedly. United deny this happened,’ the outlet claims.
The Athletic also claims that the Frenchman’s value has now dropped to around £40 million due to the circumstances.
‘Raiola’s strategy, according to sources, is to spread enough disharmony that United calculate the economics are better to get rid whatever the fee. Juventus would be willing bidders if they can create space on the wage bill,’ which confirms The Peoples Person’s article published yesterday.
Pogba is in the squad for today’s Manchester derby and while Solskjaer publicly defends his player and insists that he trains and remains as committed as anyone, his limited number of starts for United of late does suggest that the manager is preparing for life without Paul Pogba.
