The United squad for today’s Manchester derby looks set to be missing a key player and several regular members.
The matchday squad assembled at the Lowry Hotel last night, as is standard practice under manager Ole Gunnar, and whilst it is possible for a player to join up later, it is unusual.
And according to The MEN, Edinson Cavani was not present, meaning that in all likelihood he will miss the game.
At yesterday’s pre-match press conference, Solskjaer said that Cavani had trained on the grass yesterday but a decision would be made about him later.
Other players who were missing from the squad were Brandon Williams, Tim Fosu-Mensah, Odion Ighalo, Axel Tuanzebe and Jesse Lingard. Lingard’s continued absence from Premier League matchday squads is looking ominously as if he will need to go out on loan in January to get game time.
Williams, too, is struggling to get minutes on the pitch despite now being the main understudy to struggling Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Axel Tuanzebe’s absence will disappoint many fans who have been calling for him to be given a chance in the first team after the struggles of centre-back pairing Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire of late.
Ighalo’s omission even though Cavani looks set to miss the game suggests that he is no longer in Solskjaer’s plans and it remains to be seen whether he will wear his beloved red shirt again before returning to Shanghai Shenhua in January.
The squad assembled at the Lowry was: David de Gea, Dean Henderson, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Eric Bailly, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw, Alex Telles, Fred, Donny van de Beek, Scott McTominay, Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Juan Mata, Daniel James, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood.
United’s opponents City have an almost full squad available, although Pep Guardiola has said it is too soon for talisman Sergio Aguero to start the game.
Kick off at Old Trafford is at 5.30pm local time.
