'His defending is improving': Solskjaer finds the positives about star's dreadful form

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has defended his under-fire forward Anthony Martial amidst accusations that he has lost confidence.

Martial, who turns 25 years old today, is yet to provide either a goal or assist in the Premier League this season.

He also missed an easy chance against PSG on Wednesday, having scored an own goal against them in the reverse fixture and having also been sent off against Spurs at the beginning of October.

At yesterday’s pre-match press conference ahead of today’s trip to West Ham, Solskjaer was asked whether he thought Edinson Cavani’s arrival at the club had affected Martial’s confidence but the manager was quick to dismiss the suggestion.

‘No, confidence-wise, Edinson coming in is just a boost for the whole team and the whole squad,’ Solskjaer said.
‘Edinson speaks good French as well, so I’ve seen Anthony and Edinson getting on well.
As you said, the sending off stopped his season a little bit because he was just getting going, Anthony, I felt.
‘We’re very happy with his contribution, on Wednesday night, everyone points at the one chance that he misses but what about the chances that he set up? His overall contribution to the team, his cleverness, even his defending is improving.
‘It is just one of those things that, as a striker, of course you get measured by goals and, as soon as you get one, if it is off his backside, the back of his head or his heel, it doesn’t matter.
‘He’ll get going again, Anthony, I’m not concerned about that.’
Statistics suggest that Martial could start that process today and celebrate his birthday with a goal against the Hammers. The Frenchman has six goals and five assists against David Moyes’ men, his best return against any Premier League side.
