'He doesn't have the qualities': Van Gaal blasts midfielder's United role

Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has spoken out about compatriot Donny van de Beek’s decision to join the Red Devils.

Van de Beek joined the club from Ajax in the summer for a fee of €39 million but has been unable to establish himself as a first team regular.

The 23-year-old has only started two Premier League games this season, one of which, against West Ham, saw him hauled off at half time. He also made three out of six Champions League starting XI’s.

And speaking to Ziggo Sport via Football Oranje, Van Gaal said the player had made a mistake by joining United.
‘I hope his time will come, but I don’t think he made a good choice. I said that right away.
‘If you have Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes, what position should Van de Beek be in? He doesn’t have the qualities of Pogba and Fernandes.
‘And now you see that Pogba often doesn’t start. Where should Van de Beek play then?”
‘I think you could have seen that beforehand. There are so many teams, which could have done better justice to him, also in the top. He is a boy with many qualities.’
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer defended his limited use of the Dutch international at the end of October, saying ‘Donny is going to play a big part.
‘You don’t have to start the first games to be a very important player in the squad.
‘I’d be disappointed if some of my teammates said that I wasn’t important at Man United but I didn’t start many games, So Donny’s going to be very, very important for us.’
Part of the problem for Van de Beek at the moment is the heavily defensive line-ups that Solskjaer is putting out. In recent matches he has opted for two defensive midfielders, which leaves little space for creatives.
