Defiant Solskjaer offers bizarre evidence that United are much improved

Manchester United manager insists that the team is making progress despite being knocked out of the Champions League.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of tomorrow’s Manchester derby with City, the boss said ‘we played against two top teams, one who was in the final and one in the semi.

‘We were very close to going through in a very good group, that shows for me a team that’s moved forward from barely beating Colchester and drawing with Rochdale in the Carabao Cup, we struggled to beat Astana convincingly, Partisan, that’s a year back.’

It is odd that the manager should make such a comparison after having reached the last eight of the Champions League, beating PSG, in his first season in charge. By that logic, it is an admission that he took the side backward in 2019/20.

He also said suggested that the Derby offers a good opportunity to bounce back in tomorrow’s game.

‘That’s probably the best game you can ask for after a such a disappointment like that because it does stick in your system,’ he said.

In terms of the team’s fitness issues ahead of the game, Solskjaer confirmed that Anthony Martial is fit and available for selection and that Edinson Cavani is back in training.

‘Anthony will definitely be involved so he’s cleared.

‘Edinson has been on the grass but I’ll make a decision later on’

Solskjaer also hinted that David de Gea would keep his place in the side despite another disappointing game in midweek.

‘I think David’s a top goalkeeper and rightly so he’s on lists of being the best goalkeepers in Europe,’ he said, referring to De Gea’s nomination on FIFPro’s 55-man player of the year list.

‘He’s a man we really rely on and I don’t think he’s affected by criticism.’
