'Shouldn't be allowed': Johnstone blasts Fernandes for unfair penalty tactics

West Brom’s Sam Johnstone claims that Bruno Fernandes’ penalty technique should not be allowed under the current rules of the game.

The United academy graduate saved a spot kick from the Manchester United man on Saturday, only for the referee to order it to be retaken after he was adjudged to have moved off his line.

Fernandes went on to score the retake, which proved to be the winning goal of the game.

And Johnstone made his feelings clear on Twitter about the Portuguese international’s ‘hop, skip and jump’ penalty taking technique.

Replying to a Tweet saying ‘Moving off the line early yesterday, saw @samjohnstone50 denied a great penalty save… the keeper should be allowed to move anywhere in the six yard box,’ Johnstone said ‘and a striker shouldn’t be able to hop skip and jump before kicking it.’

Johnstone’s position was supported by pundit Ian Wright on BBC’s Match of the Day on Saturday (via The Mail).

‘You’ve got forwards jumping up, doing this, doing that sort of stuff and the goalie can’t move his foot off,’ Wright said.
‘They should stop people jumping and that, they should have to make a full… just run at the ball and hit it. If they can move and the goalies can’t, that’s not fair.’
Fernandes has scored 32 of 35 career penalties, with the miss against West Brom not counting against him because of the retake. He did, however, miss his first for the Red Devils against Newcastle last month.
