80 goals scored, 68% win-rate: How Solskjaer has transformed United

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has rightfully been receiving plenty of praise in light of the remarkable 5-0 win over RB Leipzig but how has he performed overall?

The legendary Norwegian’s job was under threat after a poor start to the season, culminating in the embarrassing 6-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Despite all the good work Solskjaer did last season, helping United to a third-place finish, his credentials as manager were quickly questioned.

It seems there are some who feel the former striker is not fit for the job at Old Trafford and so the second his players underperform a little, he’s quickly pushed towards the door.

However, the statistics suggest Solskjaer has every right to be leading the Red Devils, at least for now.

Although everything looks rosy right now, Solskjaer has dismissed a lot of myths in regard to his management.

He’s often been labeled as a tactically inept manager but his performances in the wins over PSG, RB Leipzig and Newcastle United all but ended that theory.

He’s also been accused of selecting the wrong personnel or failing to make impactful substitutions when needed.

Given how he rotated quite heavily during those aforementioned victories and how he made some questionable selections that paid off, it’s safe to say this myth has been dismissed too.

It’s clear Solskjaer has a lot to learn but it’s equally clear he’s grown remarkably as a manager at Manchester United and there’s the feeling he’s not quite done yet either.

This summer’s transfer window has been one of the strangest in living memory. So cast your mind back to less stressful days and test your knowledge of past United arrivals and departures in our quiz below.

"Let's see"- In-form defender responds to questions over Man United future

Manchester United star Diogo Dalot has refused to commit his future to the club, insisting he wants to take things one step at a time during his team in Milan.

The young Portuguese was sent out on loan to AC Milan for the season and many fans feared it spelt the end for him in regards to his time at Old Trafford.

The noise coming out of United is that Dalot has a future at the club and that he’s simply in Italy to develop as a player, as evidenced by the club refusing to include a purchase option in the loan deal.

However, some fans are struggling to see how he could come back to Old Trafford and still have a role to play as Aaron Wan-Bissaka is essentially undroppable.

Brandon Williams and Timothy Fosu-Mensah are also the players who are capable of providing depth in that position.

Even if supporters assume Dalot can be moved into a winger role due to his attacking tendencies, Manchester United invested in two young right-wingers just this summer.

It’s hard to see how the former Porto man can play a part unless he accepts a bit-part role which doesn’t seem likely as evidenced by his desire to leave on loan for minutes.

This summer’s transfer window has been one of the strangest in living memory. So cast your mind back to less stressful days and test your knowledge of past United arrivals and departures in our quiz below.

64 minutes, five goals: What this player brings to Man United

Manchester United fans are eager to see more of Donny van de Beek in action and the statistics certainly suggest Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should play him more often.

The young Dutchman has made quite the impact on supporters already and it’s clear to see what he brings to the team.

Van de Beek was the first signing of the summer, joining for around £35m according to Transfermarkt and so some fans expected he would be in the starting XI regularly.

However, that hasn’t quite been the case and although he’s racked up plenty of appearances, most of them have come from the bench.

Whenever he has played, Van de Beek has looked good and so fans have naturally craved to see him feature more often.

Of course this doesn’t have to be a direct cause and effect scenario but it’s still pretty suggestive of how Van de Beek helps the team overall.

The tidy midfielder rarely loses possession despite not being a safe passer and he works hard, covering a lot of ground with his smart runs.

Van de Beek is essentially the type of player Manchester United were missing as plenty of their stars prefer the ball to their feet.

This summer’s transfer window has been one of the strangest in living memory. So cast your mind back to less stressful days and test your knowledge of past United arrivals and departures in our quiz below.

'He's impatient'- How long will Pochettino wait for United job?

Former Tottenham star Jan Vertonghen has been speaking out about Mauricio Pochettino’s plans for his next management job.

The Belgian centre-back, who now plays for Benfica in the Liga Portuguesa, was at Spurs for the entire period that Pochettino was manager and is well-placed to give an insight as to what the Argentinian coach is looking for.

There has been much speculation that Pochettino wants to manage Manchester United and his is the first name to be mentioned when there is any doubt over current incumbent Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s future.

And Vertonghen’s comments have done nothing to dispel the rumours that the 48-year-old is waiting it out in the hopes of getting the Old Trafford job.

‘I can imagine he’s impatient,’ Vertonghen told CBS Soccer via The MEN.

‘I think the English league suits him very well as he’s a manager that prioritises fitness levels and the physicality of the game.

‘I think managing in the Premier League is probably the best thing he can do.

‘He will always want to coach a big team I guess, so you have to look at the biggest teams in the league and there are only two or three you can really look at I think at this point.

‘I won’t name them out of respect for the other managers, but I think that’s what he’s looking at.’

Reading between the lines, with Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola’s jobs seeming quite secure at Liverpool and Manchester City, respectively, and a return to Tottenham seeming highly unlikely, the only remaining candidates would be United, Chelsea and Arsenal.

In 2018,Pochettino said ‘I’m never going to coach Barcelona, Arsenal or Rosario Central because I’m very closely linked to Espanyol and Tottenham.

‘I’ve also grown up at Newell’s – Central’s big rival – and I’ll never coach Rosario. I’d rather work on my farm in Argentina than coach certain clubs,’ effectively narrowing the list even further.

The fact is that there are few other clubs in the world that would be a step up from Spurs, even outside of the Premier League. Andrea Pirlo’s shaky start as Juventus boss could put Pochettino on alert and Antonio Conte’s relationship with Inter Milan’s owners is fractious, but whether Italy would appeal to the ambitious coach is unknown.

Pochettino will have been out of work exactly one year on November 19th.

This summer’s transfer window was at times frustrating and disappointing. So cast your mind back to less stressful days and test your knowledge of past United arrivals and departures in our quiz below.

How Man United's starlets fared in FA Youth Cup semi-final

Photo from ManUtd.com.

Manchester United’s academy stars crashed out of the FA Youth Cup at the semi-final stage yesterday, losing to Chelsea 1-0 at the FA’s St. George’s Park in Staffordshire.

It was a brave but ultimately disappointing performance from the young Red Devils, who could never really get their attacking weapons firing consistently and were not able to recover from Bryan Fiabema’s close range effort early in the second half.

The two clubs have won the trophy no fewer than 19 times between them, with United on 10 wins and Chelsea on nine, but Chelsea’s class showed on this occasion, staying on the front foot for most of the game.

The Blues were denied an early goal when Levi Colwill’s header from a corner from Lewis Bate was scrambled away by the United defence. They then hit the bar with another header from Livramento that was deflected off Reece Devine.

United’s best chance came from a piece of magic from Anthony Elanga just before half-time, whose overhead kick hit the crossbar.

Neil Ryan’s boys were unable to recover from the sucker punch early in the second half but can hold their heads up high in what was a tough match against arguably the country’s strongest side.

Chelsea will now meet Manchester City in Monday night’s final at the same venue.

Manchester United XI: Mastny; Bejger, Fish, Mengi, Devine (Hardley 77); McCann, Svidersky; Shoretire (Forson 86), Hannibal, Elanga; Helm (Wellens 72).

Unused substitutes: Mee, Neville, Savage, Iqbal.

This summer’s transfer window was at time frustrating and disappointing. So cast your mind back to less stressful days and test your knowledge of past United arrivals and departures in our quiz below.

4-2-3-1: Man United will demolish Arsenal with this brilliant line-up

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a strong squad available to him for tomorrow’s Premier League tie against Arsenal at Old Trafford.

The only absentees are Eric Bailly and Jesse Lingard, who are still injured, Alex Telles, who is in isolation after a positive COVID-19 test and Anthony Martial, who is serving the last of his three match suspension following his sending off against Spurs.

Arsenal also have few problems, with Calum Chambers the only notable absentee.

Despite the success of the 4-4-2 diamond formation Solskjaer employed against RB Leipzig on Wednesday in the Champions League, it’s likely that he will revert to his preferred 4-2-3-1 this time and recall some key players who were rested on Wednesday.

With Telles and Bailly out, the back four pretty much picks itself at the moment, with the Maguire – Lindelof partnership now looking a lot steadier and Luke Shaw, who is reportedly in line for an England recall, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka both in good form.

In midfield, Fred has done a lot of running of late and could be rested, with Scott McTominay likely to return. Paul Pogba may also start again after Solksjaer said at the presser yesterday that he believed the Frenchman is now close to full fitness. Bruno Fernandes will almost certainly be recalled after his rest on Wednesday.

Marcus Rashford will inevitably play after Wednesday’s heroics from the bench, leaving two more forward positions to fill. With Daniel James having been poor to say the least this season, Mason Greenwood and Juan Mata look the most probable candidates although it would mean two-footed Greenwood starting in the unfamiliar left wing role to accommodate Mata on the right.

Edinson Cavani is another possibility, but it’s more likely that he will again be given minutes from the bench.

This, then, is our predicted line-up:

‘Maybe it was a mistake’ admits Arsene Wenger on missed Arsenal signing

‘Maybe it was a mistake’ admits Arsene Wenger on missed Arsenal signing

Arsene Wenger has delivered a bit of a climb down on his original stance that once players left Arsenal during his tenure there would be “no way back.”

Talking to The Tuesday Club podcast via the Metro, the former iconic Arsenal boss admitted it may have been the ‘wrong decision’ not to re-sign striker Nicolas Anelka.

“Maybe (it was the wrong decision)! He wanted to come back. Maybe it was a mistake. I wanted to give the signal to the players that once you left the club there is no way back.”

“I felt that they would then have a hesitation to leave. I didn’t give them the feeling of ‘ok I go somewhere else, I try it and if it doesn’t work I come back.”

“That’s why I didn’t do it and overall maybe I should have done it. Nicolas still scored in 125 games overall in the Premier League I think, something like that, so he could have helped us.”

It appears that Arsenal had the opportunity to sign Anelka from Bolton back in 2008 – Chelsea instead signed the Frenchman for £15million and he went on to score 59 and assist 38 for the Blues.

United starting January transfer business early with two big targets

The football transfer rumour mill is up and running again after a short hiatus and Manchester United are already being linked with some fresh faces.
First up is Ajax’s teenage prodigy Ryan Gravenberch. According to The Mirror, ‘The 18-year-old has already emerged as a target for Barcelona and Juventus who have registered their interest and been watching him.
‘But now English top flight clubs are taking interest as Dutch youth international Gravenberch played against Liverpool in the Champions League last week while Manchester United are keeping tabs.’
One thing that won’t appeal to United if they are pursuing Gravenberch’s signature is that they will have to deal with his agent, Mino Raiola, with whom the club has a particularly uneasy relationship.

The second name in the frame is AC Milan’s Hakan Calhanoglu. According to Gazzetta dello Sport via The MEN, the Turkish international is refusing Milan’s €3 million (£52,000 per week) renewal offer and ‘United could make a move to sign Calhanoglu and even offer a five year deal to entice him to Old Trafford.’

‘Out of contract at the end of the season, Calhanoglu would be free to approach in January to sign a pre-contract ahead of a free transfer in the summer – if he does not agree a new deal at Milan.,’ the outlet claims.

The strange thing about both of these transfer stories is that they concern central midfielders, an area in which United are already extremely well served. Calhanoglu, in particular, is an attacking midfielder and would be competing with the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Donny van de Beek and Paul Pogba.

If United need any more midfielders, it is surely in the holding role, since the only specialist they have in that area is the aging Nemanja Matic.

Both of these stories have the air of being generated by the players’ agents and whilst they may be true, it would not be the first time that United’s name has been used to whip up competition and demand from other clubs.

They are therefore ones that United have on their radar but unlikely to pursue aggressively at this stage.

This summer’s transfer window was at times frustrating and disappointing. So cast your mind back to less stressful days and test your knowledge of past United arrivals and departures in our quiz below.

Solskjaer admits there is pressure on two United players to score more goals

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says that United’s full backs must score goals and contribute assists in the system he wants to play.

Speaking at today’s press conference ahead of United’s crunch game against top six rivals Arsenal, Solskjaer was responding to a question about the success of his 4-4-2 diamond formation against RB Leipzig on Wednesday and whether it places extra pressure on full-backs Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka to contribute more to the attack.

‘It’s different demands in different systems, we’re still the same, talking about the same principles of being a Man United full-back, you need to be good defending and good going forward,’ Solskjaer said.

‘It’s a position we’ve always been very good at, and we know we need assists and even goals from them, so both of them have played and developed, I think they’re improving. We don’t really have wide, wide wingers like we used to do with Giggsy and David Beckham so are more and more dependent on the full backs coming forward and giving us width.’

Solskjaer also confirmed that Alex Telles, a full-back bought in the recent transfer window who has a strong record of goals and assists, will remain unavailable for selection due to testing positive for Covid-19.

Meanwhile, another United full-back with attacking qualities, Diogo Dalot, has been impressing over in Italy and put in a man-of-the-match performance for AC Milan, producing a goal and assist in their Europa League match against Sparta Prague.

Arsenal are among ‘20 clubs’ keen to sign 12 goal striker in the new year

Arsenal are reportedly keeping tabs on RB Salzburg striker Patson Daka, who is said to be valued in excess of £20million by the Austrian club.

The exciting Zambian striker already has 12 goals in 11 appearances this season, as well as five assists.

However, Arsenal could be rivaled by Manchester City according to Football.London, with the suggestion that Daka could be viewed as a long-term replacement for Sergio Aguero.

On top of interest from their rivals in Manchester, Patson Daka is wanted by around ‘20 clubs’

Salzburg has an impressive alumni roster that includes the likes of Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and Erling Haaland.

4-4-2 diamond: How Solskjaer's shot himself in the foot with big Leipzig win

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has rightfully been receiving praise for his side’s brilliant performance vs RB Leipzig but is it possible he shot himself in the foot a little?

The legendary Norweigan has done remarkably well to have his side bounce back so well and so quickly following the humiliation vs Tottenham Hotspur.

Beating Newcastle, PSG and Leipzig is evidence of that and he did it all using different systems and players too.

It’s a far cry from that 4-0 defeat to Everton during the 18/19 season and how the players struggled to bounce back from it all.

While beating PSG was thoroughly enjoyable and well deserved, the 5-0 drubbing of Leipzig was arguably the more complete performance.

Solskjaer pulled out the 4-4-2 diamond formation out of the bag and it worked better than anyone could anticipate.

The formation allows the former Molde man to select arguably his best eleven if he wanted to and yet it’s been hardly used in his reign overall.

It seems strange that a formation that has those factors has been hardly considered as the long term solution for Manchester United and instead others were used more often.

Solskjaer’s shot himself a little in the foot in the sense that there’s no way he could play this formation over a respectable period of time because he alone has invested in three wingers over two summer transfer windows.

They’re all young as well and have bright futures ahead of them but he did it because of his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation.

However, surely Solskjaer should’ve at least given the 4-4-2 diamond a chance before putting all his eggs in one basket?

Nonetheless, the former striker’s performance as manager of late has essentially put to bed the myth that he has no tactical competence so that should mean it won’t be the last time fans see the formation in action.

Leipzig gave Manchester United quite a bit of room to work in and deeper defences will need the full-backs to help unlock opponents.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw don’t tend to get forward too often and width is key in such a winger-less formation so it makes sense if Solskjaer is only saving the diamond formation for big clashes.

Fans would’ve wanted to see more similar performances to the defeat of Leipzig and hopefully they will come but they probably won’t in a 4-4-2 diamond.

This summer’s transfer window has been one of the strangest in living memory. So cast your mind back to less stressful days and test your knowledge of past United arrivals and departures in our quiz below.

Willian reveals he has been left ‘frustrated’ by his start at Arsenal

Willian reveals he has been left ‘frustrated’ by his start at Arsenal

Willian, now 32, has revealed that his time at Arsenal so far has been a ‘learning’ experience and one that has taken some time to adapt to, going as far as suggesting that it’s been frustrating.

In an interview with Globo Esporte via the Metro, Willian said that in all his career he hadn’t worked under a coach like Mikel Arteta;

“It’s been a cool, new experience. I hadn’t worked with a coach with that mindset.’

“The positional game doesn’t mean that you have no freedom on the pitch, you have the freedom to move, but many times you have to respect the position, what the coach asks, the instructions, understanding that it’ll be better for the team.”

“It may happen that you don’t touch the ball and get frustrated, but Mikel always says that, wait a minute, the ball will arrive. I’ve been learning a lot.”

Willian started the season on fire with two assists in a fine opening day Premier League win over Fulham, but there haven’t been any goals or assists since for the 69-time capped Brazilian.

'Unreal talent'- Man United fans praise young defender's performance abroad

Manchester United fans were thoroughly pleased to see their loan star Diogo Dalot perform so well for AC Milan.

The Italian giants were playing in the Europa League on Thursday night and overcame their opponents thanks to the young full-back.

Dalot was sent to Milan temporarily in the hopes he would get regular minutes at a high level so he can continue his development.

The Portuguese defender saw his progress at United stall after a series of injuries coupled with Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s arrival at Old Trafford.

Many thought Dalot’s loan meant it was the end for him and he’d have no future with the Red Devils but that’s proven far from it.

Manchester United have long insisted Dalot has a future at the club and it’s why they refused to include an option for Milan to purchase him.

Wan-Bissaka, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Brandon Williams are all capable of playing at right-back so there was hardly any room for the former Porto man.

During United’s fantastic 5-0 victory over RB Leipzig, Axel Tuanzebe also come on at right-back for a short while, showing just how hard it would’ve been for Dalot to get enough minutes.

Hopefully he can continue to get better in Italy and prove he has a right to be at Old Trafford next season.

This summer’s transfer window has been one of the strangest in living memory. So cast your mind back to less stressful days and test your knowledge of past United arrivals and departures in our quiz below.

Midfield magician: Man United star amongst the league's best passers

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has often been criticised by rival fans who feel he lacks the qualities to become a true world-class midfielder.

The Portuguese magician arrived at Old Trafford in January but settled in so well that he’s now a key figure in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

In fact, both, players from United and the fans themselves were happy to admit Bruno’s arrival is what sparked the push for a third-place finish.

Had the former Sporting Lisbon man not made the switch, it’s likely the team would have failed in their quest to qualify for the Champions League.

Rival fans who are dismissive of Bruno claim he’s only good for taking penalties but as the stat below shows, there’s far more to his game.

Bruno’s qualities are obvious to the naked eye but it’s good to see him compared to the best in the league and see how he fits in.

The sensational playmaker still has room to grow and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him step up a level this season.

Solskjaer’s task is ensuring he gets the best out of Bruno and hopefully it doesn’t come at the cost of Manchester United’s other world-class midfielder in Paul Pogba.

Barely had a sniff: Remarkable stat shows how United kept Leipzig out

Manchester United absolutely stunned RB Leipzig at Old Trafford, overcoming the Bundesliga leaders in fantastic fashion to climb to the top of their Champions League group.

Marcus Rashford was absolutely crucial in the win, coming off the bench to score a remarkable hat-trick within 30 minutes to dispose of the German side.

United defeated Leipzig 5-0 and although the club’s attackers got the praise, it was a thoroughly complete performance.

Defensively Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men were solid and certainly deserved their clean-sheet as there was hardly a notable chance against them.

In fact, the statistic below shows just how well the Red Devils did and everyone worked hard to ensure they kept out Leipzig at all costs.

This was a team that hadn’t lost a match so far this campaign and who were scoring freely, yet they couldn’t keep Manchester United out or threaten on the other end.

For RB Leipzig to enter the box just 12 times is remarkable and a testament to the effort everyone put in to make sure it stays that way.

United simply overpowered their opponents in midfield with Solskjaer’s 4-4-2 diamond setup and that provided the base on which to attack their opponents.

It’s a formation well worth considering for the long run and fans would love to see it more after the emphatic 5-0 victory.

Pastor Fred vs Sir Marcus - Man United fans divided over who is POTM

Manchester United fans couldn’t unanimously come to a decision in regards to who was October’s player of the month; an improvement on when the struggle was who was the least undeserving.

Fred, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford were all picked after fine performances following the 6-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspurs in the early phase of the month.

United came back hungry after the international break, tearing apart Newcastle United 4-1, defeating PSG in Paris 2-1, drawing with a stubborn Chelsea and humiliating RB Leipzig 5-0 at home.

It’s safe to say Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has successfully gotten his team to bounce back from that horrid loss to Spurs and they’ll be eyeing Arsenal next.

However, the Red Devils don’t play the Gunners until the first of November and so fans had to pick between the aforementioned trio now.

Bruno has been his usual fantastic self so it’s a compliment to both Fred and Rashford that he’s hardly being considered.

At a time when the tenacious Brazilian’s value was a little forgotten, he rose to the occasion by putting in tireless performance after tireless performance.

Rashford had been in fine form himself before his remarkable hat-trick vs RB Leipzig and so was deservedly in the conversation as well.
