Arsenal fans on Friday were waking up to the news that their 37-year-old manager Mikel Arteta had tested positive for Covid-19, as confirmed by the club in an official statement on Thursday night.
The entire Arsenal first-team squad has now entered a quarantine period of at least 14 days, which of course means that the following games against Brighton in the Premier League and Sheffield United in the FA Cup are postponed.
The midweek game against Manchester City was already postponed after precautionary measures were taken, this came on the back of members of the Arsenal squad meeting Nottingham Forest and Olympiacos owner Evangelos Marinakis, who tested positive for the virus.
A report in Goal even suggests Arsenal’s entire season is in doubt, with more cases anticipated in football over the coming weeks, more and more games will be postponed, throwing the entire calendar into turmoil.
Arsenal’s head of football Raul Sanllehi had this to say via the official confirmation regarding Mikel Arteta’s diagnosis;
“Mikel and the full first-team squad, players and staff, will be fully supported, and we look forward to getting back to training and playing as soon as medical advice allows.”
“Obviously Mikel’s full recovery is the priority now for us all.”
