Here’s how we rate Mikel Arteta and the Arsenal players:
Mikel Arteta – 8
It was a brave call from Mikel Arteta to keep the starting 10 players on the pitch after the red card rather than bringing on a centre back. It worked extremely well for him. The Gunners looked better with 10 than they did with 11.
Bernd Leno – 7
It was a good performance from him. Bernd Leno produced a couple of solid saves to keep his side in this game.
Hector Bellerin – 8
It was a good night for Hector Bellerin. The Spaniard started slowly on his comeback to the first team but really grew into the match. Of course, his night will be remembered for that wonderful goal but he did well enough defensively for much of the match.
Shkodran Mustafi – 7
Shkodran Mustafi really cost his side with that early mistake but it’s hard to blame him too much with the way he responded. The former Germany international did really well in the second half.
David Luiz (RED CARD 25′) – 2
It was a disastrous night for David Luiz. Playing against his former club, he really put his current employers under a great deal of stress. Luiz was unfortunate to be put in that position but it was a stupid decision to bring Abraham down and concede the penalty as well as the red card.
Bukayo Saka – 7
It was another steady night at left-back for him. Bukayo Saka was up against it with the majority of Chelsea’s attacks coming down his side. The youngster stood up to the task well.
Lucas Torreira – 7
He did well in the middle. It was another impressive display from Lucas Torreira that was full of defensive action.
Granit Xhaka – 9
He deserves a lot of credit tonight. Granit Xhaka really stepped up switching from midfield to the centre of defence for an hour. He put in a fine performance out of position.
Mesut Ozil – 3
He did next to nothing all night long. Mesut Ozil was woeful on the night, offering so little in attack. He couldn’t find much space and the side looked a great deal more competitive and creative without him in it.
Sub: Matteo Guendouzi (55′) – 7
He did well coming off the bench.
Nicolas Pepe – 6
Nicolas Pepe did pretty well. He was a threat for most of this match and had a few good openings, he just should’ve done a bit more with them.
Sub: Rob Holding (81′) – 6
He was fine coming off the bench.
Gabriel Martinelli – 8.5
It was a wonderful performance from Gabriel Martinelli. The Brazilian worked incredibly hard all match long and showed his quality when he needed to. The 18-year-old’s goal was a moment of brilliance and gave his side a great amount of confidence.
Sub: Joe Willock (90′) – N/A
Alexandre Lacazette – 4
He was poor. Alexandre Lacazette just couldn’t get going and struggled to even keep hold of the ball at times. He must improve.
