Player ratings: Man Utd claim stunning win at the Etihad, sensational performance

David de Gea 6 – Made one excellent tipped save from David Silva but was not, surprisingly, tested too much by Manchester City’s attackers.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 8 – Outstanding. Those gangly legs just seem to get everywhere. Made so many crucial interventions and handled Raheem Sterling extremely well.

Harry Maguire 7 – Very commanding, but with an added iota of quality compared with what we have seen so far. Bossed around his back four like a future captain.

Victor Lindelof 6 – Enjoyed an impeccable first half, only to look slightly sloppy at times when City threw the kitchen sink at United in the second period.

Luke Shaw 7 – On his first Premier League start since August, this was some return to the fold. Occasionally got his angles wrong but the player’s commitment was sensational.

Scott McTominay 7 – Such a crucial player for United. Provided ceaseless energy in the middle and barked at his teammates all evening.

Fred 7 – The Brazilian’s passing in this game was sensational, always finding the right spaces to advance counter-attacking movements and maintaining a cool head. Very impressive.

Jesse Lingard 6 – In those first 30 minutes, when United broke on City like demons, the Englishman came into his own. Such a good player when there’s space ahead of him, although became less of a presence as the game went on.

Daniel James 7 – The Welshman has surprised a lot of people. Once again gave a performance of such high standards, giving United menacing levels of cut and thrust down the right.

Marcus Rashford 7 – Absolute talisman. Led the charge from the first whistle, giving United the impetus to take control of the scoreline. Tucked away another penalty that he won, just like against Tottenham Hotspur.

Anthony Martial 7 – Came back from injury and looked sharp, dangerous, smooth – the kind of Martial we love to see. Scored a beautifully calculated goal.
