Player ratings: 12 mins blitz helps Man United destroy AZ Alkmaar

Sergio Romero 6 – Composed throughout and kept concentration in second half to make one excellent save when needed.

Ashley Young 6 – Poor positioning throughout the first half but popped up with a great goal in the second.

Harry Maguire 6 – A solid game at the back and seemed to feel comfortable playing alongside Tuanzebe.

Axel Tuanzebe 8 – Looks every inch Maguire’s ideal centre back partner. Didn’t put a foot wrong the whole game and looked imperious.

Brandon Williams 6 – A relatively quiet game for the young left back but still managed to impress with his forward runs.

Nemanja Matic 3 – Looking older and more decrepit than one of Wayne Rooney’s dates, it’s time Solskjaer pulled the plug on the Serbian and let some of the younger talent develop in the holding midfielder role.

James Garner 4 – This was the perfect match for Garner to press for a first team place, but the 19-year-old was invisible for much of the game and looked out of his depth.

Mason Greenwood 9 – Two fantastic goals from the 19-year-old that set Old Trafford on fire. He has surely earned his right to a starting place in the Premier League line up after this impeccable performance.

Juan Mata 6 – The Spaniard’s legs might not be what they were but his intelligence still shone through in that second half performance.

Andreas Pereira 5 – Another Jekyll and Hyde performance. Great play in the lead-up to the first goal and some sublime skills, but was wasteful too often.

Anthony Martial 3 – A lacklustre performance from the Frenchman who seemed to slow United down on the counter.

Substitutes

Tahith Chong 4 – Came on against a tired defeated side yet failed again to impress.

Ethan Laird 5 – Came on for Young and did OK other than a poor unnecessary lunge that was lucky to avoid a booking.

Phil Jones 5 – No calamities during his short time on the pitch.
