It didn’t take long for this match to burst into life. Less than a minute was on the clock when Matteo Guendouzi went down clutching his face after a perceived foul. The referee waved on and the game started proper.
It was a first-half which Arsenal looked comfortable in. Emile Smith Rowe had a bright opening 30 minutes and very nearly came opened the scoring but he did force a fine save from Arnaud Bodart in the Standard goal.
It was one of a number of good openings Arsenal created in that first half. Bukayo Saka and Joe Willock both came close, as did Reiss Nelson with a decent opportunity.
There was more than a tinge of regret for Arsenal when that first half ended. That grew to anguish soon after the break when Samuel Bastien found space down that right flank and unleashed a powerful goal-bound shot. The strike took a wicked deflection off Sokratis and wrong-footed Emiliano Martinez in the Arsenal goal to put the home side in front.
Arsenal needed to respond but hardly looked likely to do so. That much became clear when Standard broke down the left flank and cut a fine pass back for Selim Amallah. The midfielder wasn’t closed down and had time to power a shot into the far corner which found the back of the net – courtesy of another deflection of an Arsenal player.
That goal put the Gunners’ place in the knockout stages in real doubt. That soon changed when Saka found space down the left flank and whipped a wonderful cross in for Alexandre Lacazette to head in a simple chance.
Just moments later and Saka found some more space on that left-hand side. The youngster cut in and played a quick 0ne-two with the substitute Gabriel Martinelli. Saka recollected the ball and whipped a wonderful curling shot into the far corner of the net.
The scoreline in the other match put the onus on both sides to grab a winner. Unfortunately, team really looked like doing it and this one finished 2-2, sending Arsenal into the next stage.
