Manchester United will release Ashley Young at the end of the season, according to The Evening Standard.
Young has been told that his first team opportunities will be limited, with Brandon Williams having impressed this season as a back up to Luke Shaw at left back and with the young Portuguese Diogo Dalot being seen as the natural understudy to Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the right.
The Englishman has been with the Red Devils since 2011, when he joined for an undisclosed fee. Originally a winger, Young was was re-invented as a full back under Louis Van Gaal in 2014. He was a fringe player until 2017 when José Mourinho put his faith in him in the left back role ahead of the likes of Luke Shaw, Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind.
By the end of the 2017/18 season, Young had started 28 games for United, had become acting captain and had been called up for the England World Cup squad. He was England’s first choice left back for the tournament in Russia.
In 2018-19, Young became club captain. To date, he has played 258 games for the club and scored 19 goals.
The Stevenage-born player has rarely been a fan favourite, despite being acknowledged as one of the hardest working players in the squad. Some will remember him more for a pigeon pooing in his mouth during a game than for any great moment of skill or charisma.
