Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was particularly desperate for Manchester United to sign Aaron Wan-Bissaka over the summer.
The 21-year-old, following an excellent 2018-19 season at Crystal Palace, completed a move to Old Trafford for £50m in July.
Man United desperately needed a right-back, and it is claimed by the Times that the search for one encompassed a search including over 100 options, with 32 scouts in more than 30 countries involved in the operation.
In the end, Solskjaer wanted Wan-Bissaka because of the defender’s remarkable recovery speed when facing his own goal – a very noticeable trait.
#mufc looked at hundreds of right-backs around the world before signing Wan-Bissaka. It was an extensive process with input from 32 scouts in more than 30 countries. Data on each player was analysed by 15 people #mulive [times]

Solskjær particularly liked Wan-Bissaka because of his recovery strengths — getting back into position when possession is lost and defending counter-attacks #mulive [times]

Over 30 countries, they say. And the one they went for was ultimately the guy all United fans wanted, the one most heavily linked with Old Trafford, the most popular and indeed obvious option.
United may well try to scout the next N’Golo Kante, who came from nowhere, or maybe find another Andy Robertson, but their strength is effectively signing players who will get United fans excited.
Unlike Radamel Falcao or Angel Di Maria, however, this transfer actually makes sense, and looks like it may well work, too.
Wan-Bissaka, in a difficult period for United, has performed with real intelligence and intensity. There is a lot more to come, but that basic defensive skillset is undeniably there already.
