Mesut Ozil has rubbished rumours linking him with an exit from Arsenal, stating that he is “going nowhere” until at least the summer of 2021 (via The Athletic).
The Mesut Ozil problem has been troubling Arsenal for some time with the club’s highest-paid player simply not playing for the club.
The Gunners have reportedly tried to sell the former German international for a couple of years but now, Ozil has broken his silence on the subject of his Arsenal future.
“No. I have a contract until the summer of 2021 and I will be staying until then,” Ozil told The Athletic.
“When I signed the new deal, I thought about it very carefully and said it was one of the most important decisions of my footballing career. I didn’t want to stay for just one or two more years, I wanted to commit my future to Arsenal and the club wanted me to do the same.
“You can go through difficult times, like this, but that is no reason to run away and I’m not going to. I’m here until at least 2021.”
It’s long been said that Ozil has had a falling out with Gunners head coach Unai Emery, something which the player was also asked about.
“I’ve worked under some of the biggest coaches in the world — Arsene, Jose Mourinho, Joachim Low — and always I show respect. It’s the same for Unai.
“We might not see eye-to-eye on everything but that’s normal, it’s life and it’s the same with my family and friends. You have to accept it and go forward.
“But I’m proud to be an Arsenal player, a fan and I’m happy here. Whenever people see me in the street I always say, ‘This is my home’. I’m going nowhere.”
It’s an interesting interview with Mesut Ozil. The Gunners playmaker is clearly committed to the club and spoke extensively about his desire to get fully fit and back into the first-team. The incident with Sead Kolasinac earlier in the season didn’t help but the former Madrid man said that he has moved past it. Let’s hope that Ozil can return to his best form starting next week.
