Arsenal squandered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 away to Watford.

Team News – Player Ratings – Match Highlights
Match: Watford v Arsenal
Stadium: Vicarage Road, London
Kick-Off (UK Time): 16:30 15/09/2019
—–

It was a slow start for Arsenal. Gunners fans watching their side will have been fearing the infamous bounce of a new manager with Watford boss Quique Sanchez Flores taking over his first match since returning to the club.

The home side started on top. The midfield battle was a dawdle for Watford who created a host of decent opportunities which tested Bernd Leno.

But the game soon changed. Sead Kolasinac stole the ball on the halfway line and burst clear. The full-back strode on down the flank before squaring it for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who brought it down before powering his shot into the bottom corner.

The opening goal gave the Gunners newfound confidence. Soon, Mesut Ozil was pulling the strings and it was the German who slid a pass inside the full-back for Ainsley Maitland-Niles down the right. The Englishman timed his run perfectly and squared it for Aubmeyang to grab his – and Arsenal’s second.

The Gunners saw out the match until halftime but again, the home side started the quicker after the break. The only time Arsenal didn’t look comfortable in this match were from their own goal kicks. The attempts to build out from the back seemed like a disaster waiting to happen and soon, it did.

Sokratis passed the ball straight to the opposition from one such kick as Tom Cleverley picked up the ball and found the bottom corner.

Arsenal needed to steady the ship and they managed to do just that for some time. That was until the Gunners defence made yet another major error. The home side countered and David Luiz made an unforgivable challenge to bring down Pereyra. The referee pointed straight to the spot and Pereyra stepped up to score the penalty.

Here’s how we rate the Arsenal players:

Bernd Leno – 6

Bernd Leno made a couple of decent stops and could do little about either goal.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 6

It was a decent enough afternoon for him. Ainsley Maitland-Niles grabbed an impressive assist and had some good moments moving forward.

David Luiz – 4

Mistakes define matches and David Luiz had a woeful one today. His challenge for the penalty was a blatant foul.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos – 4

His game will be remembered for that woeful error for the Watford goal and rightly so. It was an embarrassing mistake from the Greek defender.

Sead Kolasinac – 6.5

It was a good performance from Sead Kolasinac. The Bosnian burst forward brilliantly for the opening goal, the kind of assist he hasn’t made in a while.

Granit Xhaka – 6

Granit Xhaka did well enough. He kept control of the ball and moved it around the pitch. His passing wasn’t particularly adventurous but he kept it safe.

Matteo Guendouzi – 5.5

It was a mixed bag from him. Matteo Guendouzi had some moments of quality but had some lapses in concentration which could have led to serious opportunities for the home side. It was a bit of a comedown from his performance in the North London Derby a few weeks back.

Sub: Lucas Torreira (67′) – 5.5

He didn’t do much wrong in his small cameo.

Dani Ceballos – 5.5

Dani Ceballos struggled to make an impact on this match. The Spaniard didn’t see much of the ball in the areas he would’ve wanted.

Sub: Joe Willock (60′) – 5

He worked hard but had a crucial chance to slide the ball to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang late on.

Mesut Ozil – 6

It was an impressive return to the starting lineup for Mesut Ozil. The German had some moments of unbelievable quality, one of which led to the second goal. He quietened down after the break.

Sub: Reiss Nelson (71′) – 5

He didn’t do much.

Nicolas Pepe – 6

Again, Nicolas Pepe showed flashes of his undoubted quality but it wasn’t quite his day. The Ivorian had some explosive moments and several quality touches but just couldn’t get things right in front of goal.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 8.5

It was a fine performance from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. He’s just so good in front of goal and showed it again with his brace. His first strike was particularly excellent.
