A much-changed Arsenal side awash with youth managed an impressive 3-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in a hostile atmosphere in Germany.

Team News – Player Ratings – Match Highlights
Match: Eintracht Frankfurt v Arsenal
Stadium: Waldstadion, Frankfurt
Kick-Off (UK Time): 17:55 19/09/2019
—–

Arsenal started well with this refreshed side. The Gunners had the best chance of the early exchanges when some good work down the left flank saw Bukayo Saka clip a ball to the back post. Lucas Torreira was rushing onto it but the Uruguayan midfielder clipped his shot over the bar.

Saka was a real live wire and almost played in Torreira for another chance after the 15-minute mark. The pass was overhit and Frankfurt pressed forward in response, Filip Kostic could, and probably should have broken the deadlock.

Less than ten minutes later and the German side was in again down that right flank. Kostic burst past Calum Chambers and forced an excellent save from Emi Martinez.

But Arsenal continued to threaten on the break. Granit Xhaka played a fine pass forward for Aubameyang to chase down the left flank. The Gabonese forward held it up and back into the middle. It was Joe Willock’s turn to be the onrushing attacker and again, he skewed his effort wide of the mark.

Arsenal were knocking on the door but it took over 35 minutes for the opener to come. Some good work on halfway saw Saka break clear with the ball. He played it through for Willock down the left flank and the midfielder’s deflected shot spun in off the crossbar.

Frankfurt pressed forward after the break but Martinez was seemingly up to everything the Bundesliga side could throw at him. At the other end, Xhaka whipped a free-kick into the box and saw his cross-shot clip the crossbar.

Arsenal continued to press forward in the second half with a string of chances. The Gunners’ task got a great deal easier when Frankfurt were reduced to ten men. Dominik Kohr was handed a second yellow.

Arsenal had a golden opportunity to make the game safe just moments later. Calum Chambers put in yet another excellent cross from the right flank for Aubameyang who was free and unmarked in the centre but hit it wide of the post from five yards.

Saka wasn’t hurt by the red card incident and soon made a more permanent impression on the match. He picked up the ball on the edge of the box and cut onto his left foot before whipping the ball into the far corner. It was an excellent goal.

But he wasn’t done with that. Saka stole the ball back high up the pitch and slid it through for Aubameyang. The Gabonese international wasn’t having the best night in front of goal but finished the chance with ease to get his customary goal. Arsenal say back and saw out the match to secure an impressive result.

Here’s how we rate the Arsenal players:

Emiliano Martinez – 9

Emiliano Martinez deserves credit. The Argentinean hasn’t played much football in recent years but stepped effortlessly into the first team here. The stopper made a string of fine saves, the best of which to deny Filip Kostic in the first half.

Calum Chambers – 7

It was a game of two halves for Calum Chambers. He looked pretty suspect defensively in the first half but progressed remarkably well after the break. He played a number of wonderful crosses into the box and can be pleased enough with his night.

Shkodran Mustafi – 7.5

Shkodran Mustafi stood out. The former German international defended well in his return to the Arsenal team.

David Luiz – 6

David Luiz was fine. He defended well enough alongside Shkodran Mustafi.

Sead Kolasinac – 6

He did well enough but Sead Kolasinac has had tougher matches.

Joe Willock – 9

It was an excellent performance from Joe Willock. The Englishman was tireless throughout the match, bursting up and down for 72 minutes. He grabbed the all-important goal and was unfortunate not to add at least one more to that tally.

He passed it well but what really stood out was his ability on the ball. Willock drove the team forward with a number of direct and pacy runs in possession. An excellent night for the youngster.

Sub: Dani Ceballos (72′) – 5

He was barely involved.

Granit Xhaka – 8

He was excellent in the middle of the park. Granit Xhaka had some good moments defensively but stood out with his ability moving forward. The Swiss midfielder played some fine passes from deep and even carried the ball well through the park.

Lucas Torreira – 6.5

Lucas Torreira worked hard tonight but he’ll be a little frustrated with his match. The Uruguayan midfielder was let down by his final ball with loose shooting and some wayward passes.

Bukayo Saka – 9.5

Bukayo Saka really stood out tonight. The 18-year-old was Arsenal’s best player in the first half and a constant threat down the left flank. He was a real live wire in possession, constantly dribbling at this shaky Frankfurt defence. His performance was capped by that wonderful finish with five minutes left on the clock and the assist for the third.

Emile Smith Rowe – 5.5

He’s had better nights. Emile Smith Rowe worked hard but just couldn’t get things right in the final third. It’s understandable given his lack of first-team football since returning from the injury and there is a lot to build on with this performance.

Sub: Nicolas Pepe (59′) – 5

It was a case of more of the same from Nicolas Pepe. He was lively and had some moments but just couldn’t get things right in the final third.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 7.5

He stood out in the second half but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang seemed to tire as the match progressed. The forward was a little flat-footed after the break with some sloppy touches and misplaced final balls. Perhaps it was just fatigue which is understandable considering how much football he’s played this season. Still, he got his goal late on so Arsenal won’t be too disappointed.
