Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has responded to Michael Owen’s claim that he probably isn’t obsessed with scoring goals.
The young Englishman has recently come under fire despite scoring two goals and grabbing an assist in the four matches played so far this season.
The criticism began when Rashford allowed Paul Pogba to take and miss a penalty despite his own penalty taking record.
The versatile attacker would then lead the line for United against Southampton but fail to take the multiple chances that came his way, costing his team two points as they drew against their 10-man opponents.
Owen believes Rashford is a more complete player than he was but questions whether the dazzling youngster is as hungry for goals.
According to the Mirror, Rashford said: “He [Owen] can only go on what he sees. Whereas the people around me [know].
“Especially when I was younger, the reason why you started playing is because you see things that you like and for me, it was goals and watching exciting people doing exciting things with the ball.
“So, the important thing is what I know. I know what I want, what I want to become and what I will become if I keep my mind on it.
“If you watch training, then you’d see how it all works. I could use Harry Kane as an example.
“He’s one of the best finishers that I’ve played with and whenever we do finishing, in my head, it’s about being as close to him as possible.
“So if he scores six, you want to score six, if he scores seven, you want to score eight. Little things like that are the bits that people never see.”
Paul Scholes had previously said something similar of note as he claimed Rashford was a scorer of great goals but not a great goalscorer.
The former midfield maestro did say however that the 21 year old should be given more chances as a striker before being written off as some fans have done.
Anthony Martial could be set to return against Leicester City so it’s likely Rashford will be shoved back out to the left-wing where he’s been devastating so far.
