Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has called on Marcus Rashford to use Cristiano Ronaldo as a role model in order to net more goals.
The young Englishman has come in for some criticism this season despite scoring twice and assisting once in four club matches.
Rashford’s decision to allow Paul Pogba to take a penalty that was missed before missing his own penalty the following week saw some fans become frustrated.
The sensational attacker then put in a disappointing display against 10-man Southampton in which he played as a striker, missing multiple chances in the eventual 1-1 draw.
For all his good statistics so far, fans still feel there’s another level to come from Rashford and perhaps that’s why he’s being criticised.
According to the Mirror, Meulensteen said: “In many ways, Cristiano is unique because he had such huge belief in his own ability.
“But I do think that Marcus Rashford has got a similar mindset to be the best player he can – and I think he should use Cristiano as his role model.
“I’m not saying Marcus can be the next Ronaldo – because I think Cristiano is a one-off talent.
“Ronaldo is one of the all-time greats who will be remembered alongside Pele, Maradona, Messi, Eusebio, and Cruyff.
“But Marcus can create his own reputation as a fantastic player if he wants it badly enough.
“That comes only by scoring more goals, winning more games and lifting more titles.
“Rashford has played most of the early games of his career as a wide attacker – like Cristiano did.
“But to score more goals, you have to get yourself into more central positions – because that gives you a better chance of putting the ball into the net.
“Ronaldo learned how to do that and it looks like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is trying to get Rashford to do the same.”
Meulensteen isn’t the first to weigh in on the Rashford debate with Roy Keane similarly calling on him to find inspiration in Raheem Sterling.
Paul Scholes also labelled the academy product a scorer of great goals rather than a great goalscorer though he also insisted more time as a striker should still be given.
It seems there will be plenty of pressure on Rashford to finally come up with the goods this season, particularly with Manchester United lacking in attacking depth.
