RB Leipzig have reportedly told Arsenal to up their offer to £70 million if they want to sign defender Dayot Upamecano (via The Standard).
It’s clear that Arsenal still want to sign at least one new defender in the coming days.
The impending sales of Carl Jenkinson and Laurent Koscielny leave the Gunners a little short, particularly in the centre of defence.
Most thought that the club would look to sign a more experienced player, to see things over until William Saliba’s arrival next season.
But it seems as if the Gunners are thinking bigger. That much was obvious after the reported €60 million offer for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano on Monday evening.
That offer was rejected and now, the Gunners have reportedly been told to up their bid to £70 million to sign the player.
Upamecano is a highly-rated 20-year-old French centre-back currently playing in the Bundesliga who has reportedly been an Arsenal target for several months.
He is strong, quick, good in the air, and impressive in possession. These are ideal traits for an Arsenal centre-back but it is a lot of money.
It’s said that RB Leipzig are basing their price for Dayot Upamecano on the fees paid for Virgil Van Dijk and Harry Maguire in the last couple of years. Liverpool certainly benefitted from spending big on Van Dijk but it’s unclear whether Arsenal can get this deal done. It would be yet another extraordinary transfer for the Gunners which would help the side immensely.
