Former Manchester United star Nicky Butt has backed youngsters Mason Greenwood and Angel Gomes to be the ones to enjoy breakthrough seasons this year.
The pair were selected by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to join the first-team squad for their pre-season tour of Australia and East Asia.
It’s safe to say they both impressed with fans quickly taking a liking to Greenwood in particular.
Gomes has been one on the brink of breaking through to the first-team for quite some time now but never has for one reason or the other.
However, Solskjaer is a manager known for his desire to give young players a chance and he’s done so in his short reign so far.
According to Manchester Evening News, Butt said: “I think it’s unfair to settle on one.
“I think Gomes could set alight this season and do really well, he’s matured and got a lot stronger.
“Purely for the excitement and the fans I think Greenwood is going to be a real, real superstar if he keeps his feet on the ground, he’s patient and he scores the goals that he can.
“He’s both footed, he’s a big, strong, powereful kid who can score goals and he’s still very much a young boy who’s likeable.”
With Manchester United’s squad lacking depth and Solskjaer’s plan to get rid of the deadwood, there’s arguably never been a better time for young players to break through than now.
Gomes and Greenwood’s versatility will certainly help them in their path to a consistent spot in the starting XI, particularly with the rest of the attack’s ability to interchange.
The former is capable on either flank, in attacking midfield or in central midfield while the latter can feature on either wing or as a striker.
