Manchester United have completed the transfer of Harry Maguire from Leicester City for £85m, making the Englishman the most expensive defender of all time, according to an exclusive report from the Telegraph.
The two clubs reached an agreement on Friday morning with Man United meeting Leicester’s requirement to pay the full £85m upfront.
Reports had suggested that Leicester were holding out for a fee of £90m before letting their star defender leave, but the two clubs have thankfully reached a compromise.
According to senior correspondents Sam Wallace and Jonathan Percy, add-on fees are likely to be included in the deal, which at £85m beats the £75m world-record sum shelled out by Liverpool on Virgil van Dijk.
United needed to do this. Maguire was Solskjaer’s main target at the start of this window and Jose Mourinho, during last year’s summer of discontent, was determined to sign the England defender too.
Liverpool held off on signing a defender like Van Dijk for too long. They are now reaping the benefits for taking that leap. United will be much stronger for it as well.
Attention now turns towards securing the signature of Bruno Fernandes and, after that, the small matter of Paulo Dybala and Romelu Lukaku.
