Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has tipped Scott McTominay to enjoy a breakthrough season in what will surely be a career defining year.
The tenacious Scotsman has looked sharp in pre-season and appears set to lock down a starting position in midfield though there have been some doubts whether that will be possible.
United are said to be keen on bringing in the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Sean Longstaff and that could jeopardise McTominay’s minutes.
Fred and Nemanja Matic also still remain at Old Trafford and the pair are both more senior and experienced than the talented youngster.
Solskjaer though has plenty of faith in Scott and so that may be enough to see him feature plenty for the Red Devils this season.
According to Manchester Evening News, Ole said: “Scott is a good example of what we expect and hope from our youngsters.
“He’s being patient, I hope he’s going to break through properly this season, or I’m sure he’s going to have a great impact on the team.
“With Nicky, now having the job, he knows what we want from players, he knows what the demands and standards are for young players coming through.”
In truth, McTominay’s minutes largely depends on what formation Solskjaer employs most throughout the season.
So far in pre-season fans have mostly seen a 4-2-3-1 being used but it’s not farfetched to expect that would change to a 4-3-3 in the ‘big’ games.
If a 4-2-3-1 is used then Scott could struggle for matches as Ole is technically overstocked with five players for two spots in Andreas Pereira, Paul Pogba and the aforementioned Fred and Matic.
However, if a 4-3-3 is used more consistently then United are probably lacking in numbers with an additional midfielder needed though this is just purely for numbers and not with quality or strength in depth.
