Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted at what kind of signings he’s still looking to make this summer with his words being rather suggestive of a lack of leadership in his squad.
Last season’s captain was Antonio Valencia though his frequent absences through injury meant the likes of Paul Pogba, Chris Smalling, Ashley Young and even David de Gea all took turns with the captain’s armband.
With the Ecuadorian no longer a part of the squad, it appears the captaincy will fall to one of United’s more experienced players in the former Watford man.
Supporters have largely turned on Young as they believe he’s no longer good enough for the starting XI so there may be uproar should Solskjaer name him captain.
However, it would be somewhat understandable given his genuine lack of real leaders as there are no standout players to hand the captaincy to.
According to The Independent, Ole said: “I never had the honour of playing with Robbo [Bryan Robson] but we need a player like him in the team.”
Some have taken this quote to mean the Norwegian will indeed invest in Harry Maguire as rumoured though that may not necessarily be the case.
It could be that Solskjaer meant a leader in a different position as it’s understood United are still keen on a midfielder.
That may be more fitting considering Robson was a midfielder himself and the club’s engine room is looking weaker than usual.
