Manchester United supporters have reacted positively to reports claiming the club had agreed a deal to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City.
The Sun and Daily Record journalist Duncan Castles both claimed on Sunday that a deal worth £60m plus a further £20m in add-ons had been agreed and that Maguire would fly to Manchester today for a medical.
The club has targeted Maguire ever since started impressing for Leicester in 2017 but failed in their approach for the Englishman – or any other defender.
United fans were notably delighted by the prospect of their club finally signing a proper centre back this summer.
Harry Maguire
Don’t know what injury record is like but don’t think he misses many. That’s an immediate plus, because consistency is required next to Lindelof. All the best teams have a solid foundation and if he signs, alongside the Swede, #MUFC should get that at least. pic.twitter.com/fJ0bRzunck

Happy that Maguire is joining United. I don’t care about the transfer fee as it’s coming out of the Glazers pockets. Now we won’t have to see anymore of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones as our centre-backs. #mufc

De Gea when we sign Maguire and he realises he won’t ever have to see Jones & Smalling infront of him protecting his goal pic.twitter.com/xrC7FTICtY

Wan Bissaka and Harry Maguire are massive reinforcements in defence. Happy with our defensive signings so far, now we wait for signings to be finalised in attack in addition to Daniel James

Maguire’s best attribute as a footballer is that he’ll replace one of #MUFC’s current centre-backs

He has the leadership qualities to take this club to the next level defensively, he’s at the perfect age and seems to have the personality, he’d become a fan favourite in no time. Shaw, Maguire, Lindelof and AWB will become the best backline we’ve had since 2012.

£80m is, of course, a bit steep, but it is a piece of business that United must do.
What they need is ostensibly not very demanding: somebody with Premier League experience and somebody who, just as importantly, does not get injured often.
Chris Smalling aside, United do not have this combination. The value of having a set defensive partnership, one that is allowed to blossom and consolidate itself, cannot be underestimated. As seen with Virgil van Dijk, it does more than merely improve your defence; it elevates the team’s aura as a whole.
You can see why United have prioritised this signing over Bruno Fernandes, although supporters will demand that both deals get over the line if this summer is to be deemed successful.
