Vincent Kompany says Frank Lampard is the ‘natural match’ for the Chelsea job with the former England international looking set to take over at Stamford Bridge.
It was confirmed on Tuesday that Derby County had given the Blues permission to speak to Lampard about their vacant manager’s role, and he is now expected to be appointed later this week.
Should the move go ahead, it will see Lampard will return to the club he spent thirteen years with as a player, five years after departing.
Kompany himself has recently returned to his former team to take up the hot seat, re-joining Anderlecht as player-manager after leaving Manchester City at the end of last season.
When asked about Chelsea’s decision to place Lampard in charge, the Daily Mail quote Kompany as saying:
Sign him up. He’s the man. I learnt so much from him.
He was a bit older when he joined Man City. Frank was an incredible professional, he stepped the level up for everyone else, and I’m trying to have the same impact as an older player.
The match is natural with Chelsea. I completely support him.
Kompany played alongside Lampard in 2014/15, when the Chelsea legend controversially signed for Manchester City before moving to New York City FC, who share the same owners as the Premier League champions.
Lampard will succeed Maurizio Sarri as Chelsea boss after the Italian left for Serie A side Juventus.
