Phil Foden is set to miss out on a starting spot for England U21’s opening game against France, with Chelsea youngster Mason Mount set to start alongside James Maddison in midfield, according to The Mirror.
It comes as a shock to some that Foden will start on the bench following the hype around him for the competition, with the teenager tipped as one of the key players to watch in Italy and San Marino.
However, it appears as if boss Aidy Boothroyd will place his trust in Mount following his impressive campaign on loan at Derby County.
Mount featured 38 times for the Rams last season, scoring nine goals from midfield and impressed on what was his first professional season in England.
Chelsea look likely to keep hold of the 20-year-old this summer and will include the playmaker in the squad next season, with the Blues having a transfer ban for the next two windows.
Foden only featured 13 times for Manchester City this season, so perhaps the lack of game time has contributed to Boothroyd’s reported decision.
