Manchester United fans now have even more cause for concern as it appears their beloved Mike Phelan’s future is rather uncertain.
The moment Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s contract was turned from a caretaker one to a more permanent one supporters called for the assistant manager’s own deal to be sorted out.
At the time it was reported that the board want Phelan to remain and it was expected he’d be signed long-term soon as well.
Matters have been pretty quiet since and now it seems there’s trouble on the horizon.
The last thing reported was that Mike was pushing to be hired as United’s first ever director of football instead of his current assistant role.
Brian Kerr: "Even Mike Phelan said to me there [yesterday] – the picture changes from week to week – asking him if he's going to take the role of the technical director and he said 'I don't know, they haven't spoken to me. The picture changes'." #mulive [otb]

Perhaps the board were waiting for the Red Devils’ future to be resolved itself before sorting out the staff.
Solskjaer unfortunately couldn’t inspire his players to finish in the top four with the recent draw to Huddersfield sealing their fate.
There’s a crucial summer ahead for the Norwegian and he will need his right hand man in order to navigate it successfully.
The truth is, whatever role Phelan wants should be handed to him as he’s too important to lose once more, especially at such an important time.
