Former full-back Glen Johnson has given his backing to Frank Lampard to become Chelsea’s next manager.
Frank Lampard has enjoyed a brilliant first season as a manager with Derby County. A run of fine form at the end of the season saw them finish ahead of Middlesbrough in the last play-off place.
They faced a tough test with Leeds United in the semi-final and they fought back from 2-0 down to win 4-3 on aggregate to book a place at Wembley.
Derby now face Aston Villa in the Championship play-off final on Monday in a game that could top off a superb debut season as a manager for Lampard.
Glen Johnson has told talkSPORT that he feels Lampard would be a great choice to be Chelsea’s next manager:
I think Lampard will definitely be Chelsea manager one day, and it might be sooner than I anticipated. Could he do the job? Now might be slightly too early and I’m sure Lamps would probably agree with that, but I definitely think he’ll be capable of being successful as the Chelsea manager.
Chelsea are set for an uncertain summer as Eden Hazard looks set to leave, they have a transfer ban and it is unclear whether or not Maurizio Sarri will stay on as manager.
Sarri has had an up-and-down season but he has not managed to endear himself to Chelsea supporters, as rumours suggest he could be set to return to Italy this summer.
Lampard is a legend at Stamford Bridge and it has been said over recent months that he might be lined up as Sarri’s successor in London.
Many assumed that it would be a few years down the line when Lampard would take over, but if reports pay off he could get the chance to manage Chelsea much sooner than that.
