Manchester United are reportedly still attempting to beat Barcelona to the signing of Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt.
The Dutchman is probably on the wish-list of just about every club in Europe after his performances in the Champions League impressed heavily.
The youngster was always a great prospect but his form has shown that he’s now ready for the big stage and can easily lead a team to the top of whatever division they’re in.
Ajax have confirmed De Ligt will leave but the question is just where he will go, particularly as Barcelona’s early status as favourites currently diminishing.
Whoever gets him it’s clear they will have their centre-back position sorted for at least the next decade.
According to the Mirror, Sport report that the Red Devils have ‘significantly improved’ their offer for Matthijs, making them ‘one of the top contenders’ for his signature despite Barcelona’s interest.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s current defensive options are Marcos Rojo, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling; none of whom particularly inspire fear in opposition attackers.
The Swede has impressed during the past season but it’s obvious he needs a better partner so it makes sense the Norwegian has been chasing De Ligt this transfer window.
