David de Gea 4 – Produced a shocker for the third game in a row. Beaten at the near post for Bernardo Silva’s goal, and hopelessly fumbled a tame Leroy Sane shot into the net. What has happened to him?
Ashley Young 5 – Applied good intensity for 30 minutes before the Ashley Young we knew returned: wasteful on the ball, terrible with his crosses, and nowhere to be seen for Sane’s goal.
Matteo Darmian 6 – The Italian doesn’t play often, but when he does, you get a solid – if unremarkable – level of performance. Maintained good discipline.
Chris Smalling 5 – Begun the game as an enforcer but the gap between himself and Manchester City’s attackers grew as the game went on.
Victor Lindelof 5 – His performance levels have dropped recently. Did not get to grips with Bernardo on the left-hand side.
Luke Shaw 6 – Made a crucial mistake in letting Bernardo cut inside for Man City’s opener, but his overall output was impressive. Adds intensity to this team.
Fred 5 – Far too sloppy in possession. Either took too long on the ball or lacked the precision to find teammates further forward.
Andreas Pereira 6 – Started the game very well and maintained impressive energy throughout, but looked slightly lost up against City’s midfield superstars.
Paul Pogba 5 – Had a few promising moments, releasing some good passes in behind early on, only to let himself down in the second half with a ponderous performance. Lacked cutting edge in the final third.
Jesse Lingard 5 – Missed a gaping open goal moments after City took the lead. Ran hard but, once again, brought no execution or composure.
Marcus Rashford 6 – Probably the best player for Manchester United. As Jose Mourinho would have put it, the Englishman played like a ‘mad-dog’ throughout, putting genuine pressure on City’s back two and going close with a couple of chances. Much better than in either legs against Barcelona.
