Mike Phelan will become Manchester United’s permanent assistant manager on the condition he receives assurances regarding the club’s management structure, according to reports.
The Englishman, who was Sir Alex Ferguson’s right hand man between 2008 and 2013, has played a fundamental role in the club’s revival under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Solskjaer himself has claimed he expects Phelan to stay at Old Trafford, stressing the importance of his No.2 remaining at Man United beyond the summer.
But according to the Mail‘s Chris Wheeler, Phelan harbours concerns over the club’s convoluted management and recruitment system – a key systemic problem since he left in 2013.
Phelan wants a clearer line of communication between coaching staff and the club before he agrees a permanent return to United. There are also concerns over the club’s bloated and ineffective scouting system, which has grown to 58 scouts. By contrast, Manchester City have just 35.
These were concerns also expressed by Jose Mourinho, whose exasperation at United’s transfer strategy set the tone for a chaotic and miserable start to the 2018/19 season.
The Portuguese had many faults, but he was right to challenge the board. Its current modus operandi in the transfer market is miles behind the likes of Man City, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
