Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is on the radar of Italian giants AC Milan, as current boss Gennaro Gattuso’s position is under threat.
Should Milan fail to qualify for Champions League football for five consecutive seasons, the board will be looking for someone to take over at the San Siro and push them to compete for a top-four finish next season.
According to Calcio Mercato, Sarri is one of the leading targets to be considered by sporting director Leonardo Araujo, along with Marseille boss Rudi Garcia, and Mauricio Pochettino of Tottenham Hotspur, who is ‘very appreciated’ by Ivan Gazidis, Milan’s CEO.
Ex-Chelsea boss Antonio Conte remains Araujo’s top target, however, he has been described as a “great dream”, and Milan are looking to keep their options open.
Sarri had a very successful spell at his time at Napoli, with consecutive top-four finishes and great use of reinvestment with the £80m transfer of Gonzalo Higuain to Juventus.
The Italian was also responsible for the positional change of Dries Mertens, from winger to centre forward, which proved vital in their contest for Champions League football.
His spell at Chelsea has seen vast changes to the team and how they play football, coining the term “Sarri-ball”, however it has received varied opinions from the fans as they have failed to challenge for the title and secure Champions League football this season; although Chelsea are one of the favourites to bring home the Europa League trophy.
Should Sarri fail to secure the trophy, and find a top-four place in the Premier League, and with Araujo’s other options for a managerial replacement looking unlikely, a move to Serie A may be on the cards with Roma also interested in the Italian.
