David de Gea 5 – Would have been angry about Southampton’s first goal, a powerful but salvageable strike to his near post from distance. Could do nothing about James Ward-Prowse’s second.
Ashley Young 6 – Solid but unremarkable performance. Moved to the right hand side of a back three in the second half and provided good balance on that flank.
Chris Smalling 6 – The Englishman’s positioning took a wobble during Southampton’s dominant period in the first half but he recovered well.
Victor Lindelof 7 – Another attractive performance from the Swede. Never allowed any Southampton player to receive space down the channels. Would have been exasperated to see two stunning long-range goals go in.
Luke Shaw 6 – Provided good energy and precision with the ball down the left hand side but could have displayed more discipline defensively at times.
Scott McTominay 6 – Struggled at times in the first half, with Manchester United’s midfield looking rather disjointed, but read the game well and kept things ticking.
Andreas Pereira 7 – A game of two halves: looked lost in the opening 45 minutes, truly superb after the break. Scored an incredible curling goal, his first in the Premier League, and assisted Romelu Lukaku.
Paul Pogba 6 – You felt the Frenchman was not involved enough. Produced some excellent moments but did not grab the game by the scruff of its neck.
Alexis Sanchez 6 – Could have exercised more presence down the middle but there were some encouraging moments: a few nice passes, smart touches, finding good positions in the No.10. Came off on 50 minutes after tweaking his knee.
Romelu Lukaku 8 – Fantastic from the Belgian. Missed chances at the start, kept going, and scored two brilliant second half goals. His spirit and dedication is incomparable.
Marcus Rashford 6 – Ran the channels well but did not link up well with his teammates around the box. Did not appear to be fully fit.

Diogo Dalot 7 – Had a truly seismic impact. Came on for Sanchez on 50 minutes and exploded down that right hand side, setting up Pereira’s goal in the process. Is Solskjaer sure he’s a full-back?
