When they fired Jose Mourinho, he gave a parting speech acknowledging that the team were not performing at their best and that to be honest a top-four finish in the Premier League would take something in line with a miracle to achieve. It seems that caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took this as an out and out challenge and while they currently sit fifth they have their sites set on the fourth place. FreeTips.com looks at the possibility of this happening.
It seems as if the battle for first and second place is a two horse race between current title holders Manchester City and Liverpool, and with Tottenham currently in third 13 points behind there seems to be little doubt as to which teams will finish first and second. But after that things start to get interesting with third and fourth place up for grabs and four teams in contention including United. Just one point separated Spurs from Arsenal; United sit two points behind them and Chelsea only one point behind again. With three points up for grabs in every game, all four are going to be looking for those wins as everything could change.
Manchester United has already been in fourth place once this season after Solskjaer took the helm and it seems as if he is indeed the hand of God working the much-needed miracle for the team. His starting form was one of the best seen, but the last two games haven’t exactly gone to plan, and they have crashed out of the FA Cup in their second loss in as many games, so is it all over for the Premier League finish they so desperately want.
Midfielder Nemanja Matić certainly hasn’t lost faith in his teammates or his manager and has defended the team stating that the last eight games are going to be their strongest, sending a warning to the other teams in contention that they are gunning for that fourth spot and will be securing it.
“We have to give our best now to reach the top four. We cannot let it go like this. There is a lot to play for. We have eight games to play in the Premier League, and we are fighting for the top four. We have the Champions League as well. We will see what we are able to do and how much quality we have. Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham will give their best to be in the top four. Everybody knows that. If you see two months ago, we were 11 points behind Chelsea, and now we are in a much better position. We have eight finals to play for us, so we have to learn from this.”
Currently Solskjaer remains a temporary addition but is in prime position and the hot favourite to take the full-time role of manager at the end of the season and announcement could be made at any time; meanwhile, there is still a definite hope for United and their top four finish with this popular man at the helm.
