Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told Manchester United players to not “feel sorry for themselves” following Tuesday night’s 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint Germain.
Man United lost Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard to muscle injuries on the stroke of half time, with the game relatively even.
The second half saw PSG simply outclass United, scoring two goals in seven minutes and closing out the game comfortably
And when asked what he told players in the aftermath, Solskjaer said: “‘Don’t feel sorry for yourselves’. ‘This is something you’ve got to learn from, this was a level up from what we’re used to, they’re experienced, they bought some fouls, that’s just part of our learning'”.
There were mistakes made by Solskjaer against PSG. He did not appear to plan for the way Thomas Tuchel’s side would flood the midfield and look to suffocate Paul Pogba, nor was there enough width to truly test the back three.
But you would have to be a severe cynic to use that as the key factor behind United’s defeat. Unfortunately, the reasons are a lot simpler: United’s game plan went out the window with Lingard and Martial going off, and PSG were – man for man – a lot better in terms of quality and temperament.
Those two things put together were more than enough for PSG to kill the tie.
