Maurizio Sarri believes Mateo Kovacic and Ethan Ampadu are two long-term candidates to thrive in Cesc Fabregas’ vacant role at Chelsea.
Fabregas left Stamford Bridge for Monaco in the January transfer window, leaving the Blues shorter of options in the middle of the park.
There were constant efforts to bring in reinforcements, but no deals managed to get over the line.
The likes of Leandro Paredes and Nicolo Barella were strongly linked, only for possible deals to fall through.
Sarri believes he has replacements for Fabregas already in his squad, however, as well as helping Jorginho earn some rest.
The Chelsea boss explained to Goal that Kovacic can adopt a deeper role over time, while youngster Ampadu is a different but effective option, too:
I have to try with our own players.
So, I think Mateo Kovacic could be a very good option. A very good option, then we need to recover completely Ruben Loftus-Cheek, after his back problem.
Then, we can play sometimes with Kovacic as a central midfielder and then Jorginho will be able to rest.
We are trying in training with two players; the first is Ethan Ampadu and the second is Kovacic.
It may be that for the characteristics, Kovacic is more suitable for this team.
As you know, Ampadu is more defensive. Kovacic is really close to Jorginho in moving the ball really fast at one-touch.
In the future, I think he will be able to do this position well.
The Blues came roaring back to form on Saturday afternoon, swatting aside Huddersfield Town 5-0 at Stamford Bridge.
Next up is a daunting trip to champions Manchester City on Sunday, which will be a far greater test of their top-four credentials.
