Unai Emery has defended Arsenal start Alex Iwobi from criticism but says what the 22-year-old must improve on (via The Mirror).
He was one of Arsenal’s best players during Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Huddersfield Town but it didn’t seem to shield Alex Iwobi from criticism.
The 22-year-old grabbed the opening goal and had a hand in the second but was reportedly booed by the Arsenal fans.
Now, Unai Emery has defended his player from the abuse but admitted that Iwobi does need to improve in some areas.
“He’s young. He has a big commitment. He has a very good physical condition,” Emery said after Saturday’s match.
“He needs to improve, tactically maybe also, some things. Above all he needs to be calm with the ball in the attacking third to have more assists and create more possibilities to score, to know when to shoot and when to dribble.
“Today he scored and he had another very good chance.
“He had also the chance to assist Alexandre Lacazette, but I think his performance today, starting with his attitude, was very good. And the performance overall was good.
“In football you can win, you can lose, you can draw. The most important thing is in the head. You are thinking to create, little by little, one team feeling and spirit.
“This is one process. It is not finished. It is not starting now and we can improve a lot.”
Alex Iwobi certainly isn’t the complete player yet but he has made a notable improvement under Unai Emery. The Nigerian international was the best player on the pitch during the first half on Saturday but did show some of his weaknesses after the break. The onus is on him and Emery to help iron out those faults and improve long term.
