Chelsea head into Sunday’s Carabao Cup final as huge underdogs against Manchester City following recent results, but Maurizio Sarri’s side have the potential to cause an upset at Wembley, according to BT Sport pundits Karen Carney and Nigel Spackman.
Football.london report that Chelsea women’s winger Carney and former Blue Spackman believe that City will go into Sunday’s final as clear favourites but Chelsea have the potential to beat anyone on their day.
The Blues face Pep Guardiola’s side for the first time since being on the receiving end of a 6-0 thrashing against City just two weeks ago, and Sarri will be desperate for a positive performance to lift the mounting pressure on his shoulders.
Despite Chelsea’s status as underdogs for Sunday’s final, however, Carney believes the Blues should not be written off just yet.
City will obviously be favourites but Chelsea have shown what they can do. They have already beaten them this season.
Chelsea have been inconsistent all year but for a big one-off game, could they do it? Anything is possible. They need to prepare well. As a neutral, everyone is saying Man City are favourites.
Spackman agreed with the Chelsea women’s winger, and believes the Blues’ should be fresh after Sarri rested a number of players in the midweek win over Malmo in the Europa League.
The former Chelsea man also revealed he believes the Blues have to potential to get at City and scoring an early goal could be crucial for their chances on Sunday.
It could change in a week with Tottenham next week as well. Cup finals are about the team who performs on the day. The good thing is some of the Chelsea players had a rest for the Malmo game which you can do in the Europa League but not the Champions League. The Chelsea players will be fresh. If they get the early goal against Manchester City, you never know. They can match it for one day against Man City. Man City start as favourites but I wouldn’t write off Chelsea.
