Sergio Romero 6 – Poor defending kept the Argentine busy. Made a series of polished saves from various angles, although rarely had to bring out his inner David de Gea with anything spectacular. Will be happy with a first clean sheet of the season.
Diogo Dalot 6 – Enjoyed a relatively trouble free game, with most of Reading’s threat coming down the other side, but could have produced more conviction going forward.
Matteo Darmian 7 – Another quietly very good defensive display from the Italian. Used the ball elegantly and rarely let anything in behind him.
Phil Jones 6 – Had a couple of jittery moments in the first half before the game somewhat plateaued after the break.
Ashley Young 7 – Solid captain’s performance. Defended resolutely and, in a chaotic first half, ensured the back-line maintained its position.
Scott McTominay 6 – Had a torrid first half, losing possession far too often, but looked more comfortable when moved back to the holding midfield role.
Andreas Pereira 7 – Needs to play more under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Brazilian was not always tidy in possession but that natural ability with the ball is there to see. Delivered a number of clever passes round the corner and through the lines, often spotting where loose balls would end up.
Fred 5 – A deeply frustrating performance. Regularly lost the ball in key areas and often found himself muscled off the ball.
Juan Mata 5 – Won a penalty and then scored it to get his team going after a patchy opening 20 minutes. Had a largely poor first half as he struggled to pick out space further up the pitch.
Alexis Sanchez 6 – An encouraging performance. Played with good aggression, winning the ball in key areas, and supplied an excellent assist for Lukaku. Came off with a knock in the second half.
Romelu Lukaku 5 – Scored a very well taken goal on the stroke of half time but, aside from that, did absolutely nothing of note. Needs to offer a lot more to challenge Marcus Rashford.
