Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has backed Maurizio Sarri’s decision to publicly criticise the squad after the defeat to Arsenal last weekend, the Guardian report.
Giroud has featured in 26 matches under Sarri this season, with the World Cup winner scoring just four times in all competitions.
The 32-year-old replaced Willian for the final 23 minutes at the Emirates Stadium last weekend, however, the Blues fell to a disappointing 2-0 defeat.
The defeat led boss Sarri to question the mentality of his current squad shortly after the game, with the Blues responding in the week by booking their place in the Carabao Cup final thanks to a shootout win against Tottenham Hotspur.
And when asked if Sarri’s choice to publicly criticise the squad following the defeat Arsenal was fair, Giroud said:
Yes. You can see from the start that you are not really in the game when you miss passes and you lose duels. That’s the first thing in football.
We are professional, we know we can play well and that we need to do more. We talked between us, but afterwards you have to put the action on pitch. You have to show determination through some actions.
The striker was then asked about the arrival of Gonzalo Higuain, with the Frenchman admitting the Argentine forward will help him step up across the remainder of the season.
It will help me to step up again, keep me fighting and to be competitive by working hard in training.
I also hope that he will help us to win trophies.
