David de Gea has turned down the prospect of moving to Juventus or Paris Saint Germain and will instead commit his long term future to Manchester United, according to ESPN‘s Mark Ogden.
The club recently activated a clause on De Gea’s existing deal which keeps him at the club until 2020, although doubts surrounding his future have remained.
Jose Mourinho, recently sacked by the club, declared in November that the Spaniard wanted to stay at Old Trafford beyond his current contract.
And according to Ogden, De Gea has favoured remaining at United over the advantages of moving elsewhere, and is edging closer to a deal set to be worth around £350,000-a-week.
There was a time when De Gea was keen on returning to Spain, coming painfully close to joining Real Madrid in 2015, but with the latter signing Thibaut Courtois in the summer and Barcelona happy with keeper Mark-Andre ter Stegen, the prospect of a move to his homeland seems unlikely.
De Gea is happy at United, whose supporters adore him, and the recent relocation of his partner, Edurne, to Manchester from Madrid suggests he is leaning towards remaining at Old Trafford for the long term future.
Ensuring he does just that should be one of Ed Woodward’s main priorities.
