Former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has praised present manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for giving the players freedom following their 5-1 win over Cardiff City.
The Norwegian watched on as his side gave him his dream debut after much excitement was built up over the past week.
Solskjaer has taken over from Jose Mourinho as a caretaker manager but if he can continue to bring out performances such as those out of his United stars then he may yet have the job permanently.
The club legend hasn’t made his desire a secret but will have just six months to convince the board he deserves the role.
Mauricio Pochettino is the current favourite but Rooney has praised Ole for giving the players something they’ve been missing for quite some time now.
Rooney: “They looked a bit restricted, the players have a lot of ability. Playing for United is a lot of pressure, a lot of things was happening between the team and manager. The players have that freedom, Ole has given them that. It was a fantastic day for the club.” #mufc [BT]

Rooney: “The way they moved the ball and confidence they seemed to have in playing the game. It’s a massive result for the football club. Hopefully they can kick on.” #mufc [BT]

Solskjaer had very little time to prepare his team for the match against Cardiff but the change in play was immediately apparent.
The Red Devils played on the front foot for a change and though there’s obviously a need to develop things further, it was all smiles at the end of the day.
The hectic Christmas period wasn’t a good time to introduce Ole to the side but he’s been blessed with a relatively easy fixture list against the likes of Huddersfield, Bournemouth and Newcastle.
