Player ratings: Man United smash Fulham, Rashford brilliant

David de Gea 6 – Went the wrong way for Fulham’s penalty but, aside from that, hardly hard to break a sweat.

Diogo Dalot 7 – Delivered two things which supporters have wanted to see from their full-backs for years: aggressive, direct running down the wing and a series of pinpoint crosses. Superb.

Phil Jones 6 – Defended calmly and assuredly in the first half but was all at sea in the lead-up to Fulham’s penalty.

Chris Smalling 6 – An easy day at the office. Hardly ever let a tame Fulham attack get past him, dominating in the air and maintaining a solid defensive line. Subbed off with a knock after 56 minutes.

Ashley Young 7 – Refreshingly direct from the Englishman. Slammed home the opener after cutting into the box and threatened on the left hand side more than usual.

Nemanja Matic 6 – Unspectacular but solid throughout the game. Seems to have much more direction to his game when playing in a midfield pivot.

Ander Herrera 6 – Enjoyed a spectacular first half, keeping the ball near Fulham’s box by pressing constantly and moving the ball well, but gave away a penalty and missed a sitter after the break.

Juan Mata 7 – Another subtly very accomplished performance. Dictated his side’s passing in an impressive first half, stroking home a wonderful second from Rashford’s pass.

Jesse Lingard 6 – Begun the game very brightly, linking up nicely with Mata in the middle, before fading as the game went on.

Marcus Rashford 7.5 – Once again, an excellent ‘mad-dog’ performance. Tore forward with venom whenever he could, pinning the visitors back in a rancorous first half. Supplied a lovely assist for Mata and then scored a long-range goal of his own towards the end. Without doubt the best player on the pitch.

Romelu Lukaku 7 – After over 17 hours on the pitch, the Belgian finally broke his Old Trafford goal drought with a tap-in. Put in a strong striker’s performance too: holding up play, passing accurately, stretching the pitch. An encouraging display.
