"Man United is in my heart": Solskjær speaks out after becoming interim coach

Ole Gunnar Solskjær noted that Manchester United was “in my heart” after assuming the caretaker position for the rest of the 2018/19 season.

Jose Mourinho was removed from his post on Tuesday morning following a miserable decline into mediocrity on the pitch since the summer.

The Norwegian boss, who made 366 appearances for Man United over 11 years, will be joined by assistant Mike Phelan, Sir Alex Ferguson’s right hand man from 2008 to 2013.

Solskjaer said in a statement that the opportunity to manage United was too good to turn down.

“Manchester United is in my heart and it’s brilliant to be coming back in this role. I’m really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club,” he said.

“This is an opportunity I had to take. I am looking forward tremendously to lead #mufc until the summer. Meanwhile, I will closely monitor what is happening here at home (Molde).”

Erna Solberg, Norway’s Prime Minister and leader of its Conservative Party, wished Solskjaer well during his six months at Old Trafford.

There is little evidence to suggest that Solskjaer has the credentials to manage United but, at the very least, his presence alongside Mike Phelan gives hope to supporters that their club will once again seek to play a more daring, aggressive style of football.

Nobody expects United to achieve anything this season. What matters, really, is how the club goes about moving forward next season. In the meantime, Solskjaer and his players have a free hit. They should feel as if they can play without fear.
