Jose Mourinho confirmed after Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal that Anthony Martial did not suffer an injury.
The Frenchman scored his seventh Premier League goal in as many games against Unai Emery’s side to crown another impressive performance – this time playing down the middle closely alongside Marcus Rashford.
He was replaced by Romelu Lukaku in the second half after seemingly picking up some kind of muscle injury during a furiously paced game.
Speaking in the aftermath, Mourinho revealed that Martial had only picked up a ‘pre-injury’ insofar as the Frenchman felt staying on the pitch for any longer would have precipitated an injury.
“He doesn’t think it is an injury,” Mourinho said. “He thinks it’s a pre-injury, he was feeling tight.”
Supporters will breathe a sigh of relief at this news. Because, for all the struggles this team has encountered of late, none of it appears to have rubbed off on Martial, the club’s top scorer this season and indeed top scorer among all United players since his arrival in 2015.
Some do not recognise this notion that Martial is not just a top class goalscorer but indeed the best finisher this club has at the moment – and by some distance.
