Chelsea consolidated their hold on the Champions League spots with a 2-1 victory away to Brighton, a result that was more comprehensive than the scoreline suggests.
First-half goals from Pedro and Eden Hazard seemingly ensured a comfortable afternoon on the south coast, as the latter was once again deployed in a false nine position with Willian and Pedro either side of him.
In this fixture last season, free-flowing attacking interplay between Chelsea’s attacking trio resulted in a resounding 4-0 victory and after 40 minutes or so the Blues faithful were questioning deja vu, as Pedro tapped in the opening goal before the instrumental Hazard raced clear to double the lead and leave Chelsea in a very commanding position at half-time.
As play got back underway, Maurizio Sarri’s vertical tiki-taka was somewhat nullified by a more aggressive Brighton press, but Marcos Alonso was still afforded the opportunity to smack the post with a rangy drive.
The Seagulls, who had created very little in the attacking phase, were given a lifeline through Solly March’s hooked effort – reducing the deficit to just one.
A late onslaught from Chris Hughton’s side was withstood and meant Chelsea occupied fourth place on the Premier League table, whilst Brighton stay in 13th.
